As long as I'm still up...

TITLE: When You Care Enough to Send the Very Best
CHARACTERS: Jody
GENRE: Gen
RATING: G
WARNINGS: Nope.
SPOILERS: Not really.

Jody almost didn’t open the envelope that arrived with no return address, postmarked from Kansas. However, it felt like a card, and she suspected it might be from her insurance provider--they sent one every Christmas, after all!

It was a birthday card, and a rather inappropriate one at that! It had messages in handwriting from two different people.

-Sam’s no fun and a prude, so I picked this out for you.

-I’m sorry, Sheriff. At least you don’t have to live with him.

-Whatever. You love me best, right?

Jody found a spot for the card on her refrigerator.

Merry Christmas Fugitives!

Merry Christmas Fugitives!

Jody had stopped marking the holidays a few years ago. There wasn't anyone or anything to celebrate and she'd picked up overtime hours keeping drunks out of their cars.

Bobby's invitation had been unexpected and welcome. She knocked on his door uncertainly, clutching homemade chocolate cake and mince pie to her chest.

"Merry Christmas Jody!" Bobby opened the door and ushered her in out of the cold. "Everyone else is already here."

The kitchen was warm and full of faces, familiar and new. She'd seen most of them in wanted bulletins at some point, she couldn't think about that now.

Jody blinked down at the blond five-year-old looking at her with equal skepticism.

“I’m really sorry,” Sam Winchester apologized for about the tenth time, “but I don’t know anything about kids, and somebody’s got to watch him while I fix this!”

“Okay,” she agreed. Did they really think she’d just slam the door in their faces?

“Thanks! We owe you!” Then Sam was gone, and she was left in another stare-down with de-aged Dean.

She had some old clothes in the attic from...before...that might fit him, but no toys.

“You like cartoons?” she asked.

Little Dean had been wary of her at first, but now they were snuggled together on the couch watching something bright and loud. He was close enough that she both heard and felt it when his tummy rumbled.

“Hungry?”

He nodded. He didn’t talk much.

“You know what sounds good to me?” No response. “I think I’m going to bake some cookies. Should I make chocolate chip or peanut butter?” Still nothing.

She got up to head to the kitchen, but there was a tug on her pants leg.

“Peanut butter with chockit chips?” he whispered hopefully.

“That sounds perfect.”

After a quick run to the supermarket, where Dean was perfectly behaved and surprisingly helpful, Jody began searching her kitchen for her mixing bowls and other supplies.

She looked up when she heard a scraping sound and watched Dean drag a chair from her dining set over to the counter so he could reach.

“Can I help?” He still spoke quietly, but now she could hear him from several feet away.

“Certainly! Would you like to be the official mixer?” She held out the wooden spoon, handle first.

He smiled as he took it. She counted it as a victory.

Jody was going to miss looking after Dean, but she was glad he was back to normal.

He pulled her into a tight hug that she returned just as fiercely. “Thanks for being so awesome,” he mumbled in her ear. “I know it was probably rough.”

“Nah,” she reassured him, “you were a good kid, and it was kind of nice to act like a mom again.”

“You know,” he said after a long pause, “Sammy won’t be here to pick me up for a while.”

“Oh?” She quirked an eyebrow.

“Wanna bake another batch of cookies for the road?”
